Amsterdam History

The mark of evidence of Amsterdam history begins from the time period 27th October 1275. This time a fishing village who had built a bridge with a dam across the Amstel River was granted freedom by count Floris V. Officially the name Amsterdam honored in 1300-01. The city continuously flourished from the 14th century onwards especially after Eucharistic miracle it became a pilgrimage city.

The natural harbor of Amsterdam attracted trade between Holland and the Baltic which helped feed the city’s waterlogged hinterland. After the establishment of Dutch India Company in 1621, Amsterdam merchant became rich. The economic boom attracted people from within the Dutch Republic and from other countries. Burgomasters were the most powerful men in the country. They ruled Amsterdam with the help of corporate institutions. Amsterdam have tolerant religious climate.

History of Amsterdam shows continuous decline in Amsterdam prosperity during 18th and 19th century. But the end of 19th century again called the second golden age for Amsterdam.

Amsterdam canals have significant place in Amsterdam city planning. Houses in medieval period were generally built of wood. The interesting fact is that the large numbers of Amsterdam dwellings still have timber frames. Old buildings still are the centre of attractions for the tourists. Name of such buildings are the Old Church (Oude Kerk), built in the 13th century, and the New Church (Nieuwe Kerk), begun in the 15th century, are outstanding. Other notable buildings are the Mint Tower (Munttoren), with a 17th-century upper part superimposed on a medieval gate; the South Church (Zuiderkerk, 1611); the West Church (Westerkerk, 1631), where Rembrandt is buried; the Trippenhuis, housing the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences; and the Old Man's House Gate (Oudemanhuispoort), now the entrance to one of the University of Amsterdam's main buildings.
